What can you expect at the Church of Zoutelande?
- Deep Historical Roots: The church of Zoutelande, originally a Catholic church, was founded around 1270. The current church tower also dates from that period, making it one of the oldest parts of the building.
- Medieval Architecture: The church building itself was erected in the 14th century, with a history that goes back to the Middle Ages.
- Changes Over the Centuries: During the Eighty Years' War (1568-1648), both aisles were demolished. In 1735, a major restoration took place, and the church received its current form, without a consistory. The consistory was added after World War II.
- Recent Restoration: In 2011, the church underwent thorough restoration by the Protestant Community Zoutelande. The walls, damaged by salt, were treated both inside and outside and re-pointed.
- Multifunctional Use: After the restoration, which also modernized the interior and replaced the pews with chairs, the church is now suitable for multiple purposes.
A visit to the church of Zoutelande offers not only a glimpse into the architectural beauty and history but also into the resilience and evolution of this religious place through the centuries.
